Nuclear War
While World War II may have ended with nuclear weapons, many fear World War III could start with them. It is estimated that there are 16,400 nuclear warheads today. If war were to break out, many would die from vaporization. The survivors would have to cope with radiation and nuclear winter. it is unlikely civilization would be able to recover.
Coronal Mass Ejection
A coronal mass ejection (or CME) is a giant cloud of solar plasma drenched with magnetic field lines that are blown away from the Sun during strong, long-duration solar flares and filament eruptions.
While a CME could not wipe out humanity outright. A CME of large size could destroy electronics on earth. The last major CME was in 1859. It destroyed telegraph wires and aurorae was seen as far south as the Caribbean. Thankfully, in 1859, humans were not dependent on electricity. If one were to hit today, the power grid could be destroyed. Modern infrastructure could collapse. Without power and food shipments, Mass starvation would follow.
Global Pandemic
A deadly pathogen could easily wipe out a large percent of humans. The Spanish Influenza killed even more people than World War I. Given how connected all nations are, and how easy air travels is , A deadly plague could spread faster than scientists could react. If enough skilled workers and scientists succumbed, Modern Civilizations would have to start from the beginning.
Yellowstone Super Volcano Eruption
Unknown to most, Yellowstone National Park is a super volcano. An eruption would blanket North America in mountains of ash and dust clouds. Ash would hang in the air for days, smother planet and contaminate water. Global temperature would then plummet. A food crisis would likely follow, and humanity would struggle to rebuild.
The last time it erupted was 600,000 years ago, and we're due for another.
Asteroid Apocalypse
According to NASA spokespeople, "An asteroid impact is not a matter of if, but a matter of when and how large."
"No government agency has accepted responsibility to stop an asteroid."
With governments cutting their space programs, an asteroid could be missed. If a 1 mile wide asteroid were to hit tomorrow, life would be wiped out. The 1 million megaton explosion would cause mass destruction and global tsunamis. Then dust thrown up would destroy what remained of the ecosystem. All species that manged to survive would starve shortly afterwards.
