Russia's Greatest Mistake Ever

Sale Of Alaska!!!!

The sale was made as it was very difficult for Russian empire to maintain its territory in Alaska from then enemy British Empire. So the negotiations was made with America.

Purchase price set at $7.2 million ($123 million today), or about 2 cents per acre ($4.74/km2).

The transfer ceremony took place in Sitka on October 18, 1867. Russian and American soldiers paraded in front of the governor's house; the Russian flag was lowered and the American flag raised.

Russia, not knowing what is lying beneath the Alaska thought the purchase threatened British control of its Pacific coast colony.

After 20 Years, in the 1890s OIL was discovered in Alaska.

Approximately 1.2 billion barrels of oil and estimated amount of undiscovered natural gas in the region is 53 trillion cubic feet (1,500 km3).

Cost of 1 barrel oil now is US$55, So 1.2 billon barrel is US$66 billion dollar.

Cost of natural gas per thousand cubic feet US$2, So 53 trillion cubic feet costs US$106 billion. (tough cost is measured in BTU, it is approx)

This is too costly right!!!
